International Affairs’ cultural programming offers international students and the surrounding community the opportunity to gain an understanding of each other’s diverse cultures and backgrounds. Programs provide international students the chance to enhance their experience while studying at Missouri S&T, and form long lasting cross-cultural friendships. Our international students have the opportunity to participate in the following programs.
International Student Advisory Council (ISAC) was created to ensure that concerns of the Missouri S&T international student population are addressed and to create an environment of positive communication. Students and Missouri S&T representatives work together to ensure that student concerns are addressed, while communicating a clear understanding of the rules and regulations of the university.
Missouri S&T has numerous international student organizations that host annual events to share their culture with the S&T community. These organizations provide great opportunities for new international students to connect on campus.
International Education Week celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.
The International Friends program links students with host families and individuals from the community, creating positive and meaningful relationships that can often lead to lifetime connections. This program can be an important part of their successful experience at Missouri S&T. It offers insight for international students into activities such as cooking, shopping, sharpening language skills and learning firsthand about the American way of life. It provides American partners with an opportunity to learn about international cultures and customs.
Conversation Partners meets every Tuesday from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Members of the community visit to interact with our students. It is an excellent way for students to become comfortable in conversational English and learn about American culture, as well as customs from all around the world.
Each semester, Intensive English Program (IEP) students take field trips to experience local and regional sites. These outings provide outstanding opportunities for IEP students, faculty and staff to learn, socialize, and explore local and regional nature and historical sites in the Heartland of America.
The Office of International Affairs provides outreach and community awareness through the Global Ambassadors Program and the annual Celebration of Nations event.
The Global Ambassadors Program partners with local schools to arrange cross-cultural exchanges between Rolla-area students and international students at Missouri S&T. Through community outreach presentations, local students learn about other countries and cultures. Presentations may include geography, dance, costumes, games, sports and songs.
Celebration of Nations gives area residents and Missouri S&T students the opportunity to showcase and celebrate the vibrant cultural diversity that makes Rolla, Missouri unique to the Ozarks. Created in 2010, the annual event gets bigger and better every year thanks to outstanding participation from the community, great sponsors and full support from the city of Rolla. Downtown comes alive for this multicultural event that includes live music and dance, ethnic food, arts, crafts and displays and children’s activities.
