English Language Proficiency Requirements

All applicants should arrange to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE and request the testing company send results directly to the following address:

First-Time Freshmen Applicants

First-time freshmen applicants must fulfill Missouri S&T's English language proficiency requirement.
  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 79, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or a minimum PTE score of 53.

If you are admitted to S&T based on your academic record, but have not provided proof of meeting the English language proficiency requirement, you must complete English language proficiency testing upon arrival at Missouri S&T. Testing is administered by the Intensive English Program.

 There are three possible outcomes to this testing:

  1. You are approved to enroll full-time in academic classes.
  2. You are approved for the Pathway Program, where you can concurrently enroll in both academic credit courses and English language courses.
  3. You are required to enroll full-time in the Intensive English Program.

Undergraduate-Transfer Applicants

Undergraduate-transfer applicants must fulfill Missouri S&T's English language proficiency requirement.
  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 79, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or a minimum PTE score of 53.

Transfer applicants who have been successfully enrolled full-time in graded, academic coursework for at least one academic year at an accredited U.S. college or university may be considered as satisfying the S&T language proficiency requirements.  The decision regarding your English language proficiency, based on your participation with a U.S. college or university, will be made on an individual bases by the Admissions Office at the time of admission.

If you are admitted to S&T based on your academic record, but have not provided proof of meeting the English language proficiency requirement, you must complete English language proficiency testing upon arrival at Missouri S&T. Testing is administered by the Intensive English Program.

Graduate applicants must fulfill Missouri S&T's English language proficiency requirement.
  • Obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 80, minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or minimum PTE score of 58. or meet the department TOEFL requirements. Individual departments may require higher scores. Please check with your department for specific English language requirements.

If you are admitted to S&T based on your academic record, but have not provided proof of meeting the English language proficiency requirement, you must complete English language proficiency testing upon arrival at Missouri S&T. Testing is administered by the Intensive English Program.
