English Requirements, Cost & Application Deadlines

English language proficiency requirements:

First-time freshman must fulfill Missouri S&T’s English language proficiency requirement. Minimum English proficiency test score requirements are 79 for TOEFL or 6.0 for IELTS.

If you are admitted based on your academic record, but have not provided proof of meeting the English requirement, you will be required to complete English proficiency testing upon arrival at Missouri S&T, administered by the Intensive English Program (IEP) staff. There are two possible outcomes to this testing:

  • You are approved to enroll in academic classes.
  • You are required to enroll full-time in the IEP.

Undergraduate transfer applicants must fulfill Missouri S&T’s English language proficiency requirement. Undergraduate transfer applicants can meet this requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Obtain a 79 on TOEFL or 6.0 on IELTS
  • Complete a recognized U.S.-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program

Transfer applicants who have been successfully studying full-time in graded, academic coursework for at least one year in the United States may request that the English language requirement be waived. This decision will be made on an individual basis at the time of admission.

If you are admitted based on your academic record, but have not provided proof of meeting the English requirement, you will be required to complete English proficiency testing upon arrival at Missouri S&T, administered by the Intensive English Program (IEP) staff. There are three possible outcomes to this testing:

  • You are approved to enroll in academic classes.

Graduate students should arrange to take the TOEFL or IELTS and request that the testing company send results directly to Missouri University of Science and Technology. Each academic department has different score requirements that can be found on the Graduate Studies page
